WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION?
The best time to book your newborn session is while you are still pregnant, during the 2nd-3rd trimester is ideal.
Your due date will be penciled in and the session finalized once your little one arrives. Ideally, I like to photograph newborn babies between 7-14 days old. This is the time when babies have established somewhat of a routine with mom but still sleep deeply and can remain in curled up womb-like poses.

Is my baby too old for Newborn Photos?
Typically, the younger the baby the better. But to be honest, there is no magic time frame. Some babies do better early on while others do better later. Some babies make their arrival early as well and this can buy you time. It is important to understand that newborns are never turned away in our studio for their age, however; certain poses may not be possible as they get older. The first 14 days works best to get peaceful sleepy, poses. After two weeks of age, they are more likely to be disturbed while sleeping, and can also become colicky or baby acne can start to flare, it doesn't mean it is impossible,
I have photographed babies up to 5 weeks, it is not ideal but can still work out nicely.

Do you practice newborn safety?
Absolutely! My number one priority during a newborn photo session is the safety of your tiny human. Any difficult shot is done with a Photoshop composite. From the froggy pose to a hanging swing, these images are carefully taken with 2 images, then later put together in post production to ensure that your baby is always safe. I also always ask Dad to be my spotter so that someone is with the baby at all times.
WHERE WILL THE SESSION TAKE PLACE? DO YOU TRAVEL TO A CLIENTS HOME?
Newborn sessions take place at my studio located in the Lasalle area. I have everything set up for your session as far as lighting, controlled temperature, props, backdrops. I can travel to your home for an extra fee depending on the distance, however it is important to note that anything done outside of my studio is captured as lifestyle in format and does not include any props or backgrounds from the studio, I photograph your baby and family in your own environment. I however will make the exception with wraps as per your request.
WHAT SHOULD PARENTS / SIBLINGS WEAR?
If your package includes sibling/ family photos I recommend you wear soft neutral colors such as beige, grey, blush, soft blue. I suggest avoiding any loud and bold colours with prints and logos. I prefer to create timeless looks that will stand the test of time hanging on your wall.
At the end of the day you need to wear what makes you feel confident and of course comfortable. Being uncomfortable in your clothes
will show in the portraits. I don't think you need to all match but I would avoid you all wearing different colors.

How long does a newborn session last?
Typically a full newborn session with family can take between 2 to 3 hours. However I normally reserve a 4 hour block so that no one is rushing. I prefer my sessions to be an enjoyable experience, free of stress where the parents can kick back on the couch for a while and watch as I take photos. A mini newborn session can last between 1h to 1.5hrs as this package concentrates solely on your little one.
What to expect if we are bringing siblings?
When there is an older sibling involved, if it's possible and to make things easier for your toddler, I recommend having them join us a bit later in the session. This way, they won't have to wait around for an extended period, and we can capture some adorable sibling moments when they arrive later in the session. A newborn session can be quite long for a toddler to wait around so I always suggest planning in advance.
Is there anything I should do to prepare for my session?
We know that it might be difficult to predict when your baby will want to eat and sleep during those first few days, but ideally, your baby should be fed, changed and sleepy before the photo session begins. Normally I suggest feeding your baby as soon as you arrive. We will want your newborn sleepy for the entire session, that is how we accomplish those cute and cuddly sleepy poses, so having your newborn in that “milk drunk” state with a full belly is exactly how we will want to get started. It is very important that your baby gets a full tummy prior to the beginning of the session so we can spend the most time taking pictures during your session. During the session, we may take a nursing or bottle break, make sure to bring an extra bottle if you are bottle feeding if the baby should get hungry and needs a break. I suggest prepping your diaper bag the night before so you are not rushing. Lastly, if your baby takes a pacifier please make sure to bring it.
WHEN IS your PAYMENT DUE?
If you have booked a combination package with maternity and newborn photography, your full payment will be due on the day of the maternity photo shoot. If you’ve only booked a newborn session, your full payment will be due on the day of your newborn session. We accept, debit, credit and eTransfers.
Why is the room so warm during a newborn session?
In the first half of the session the studio is heated to a warmer than normal temperature so be sure to wear something light and comfortable
and be prepared to sweat a little. Newborns cannot regulate their body temperature therefore we heat up the studio so your baby can be comfortable
when we remove his or her clothing. If you've chosen a newborn package with family photos you are more than welcome
to change into your outfit once we start the family portraits later in the session, the temperature will be lowered at this time.

Sleepy Baby
All of those classic, sleepy newborn images we like to capture, require your baby to be in his or her deepest sleep. It may sounds counterintuitive, but try keeping your baby awake 30 minutes to an hour just before our session time. Don’t stress if you cannot do this! It’s simply a suggestion
but baby’s have their own ideas of when they want to sleep and that’s ok too.

When will I get to see our photographs?
Your proof gallery will be ready within 2 weeks from the date of your session date and be sent to you by email via an online private viewing gallery. Once you’ve made your selection it can take about 2 weeks to finalize and retouch your images. So overall it can take 3 to 4 weeks to have your final images.
Our studio is pet friendly!
As you can probably see from some of the photos in my portfolio, I’m totally okay with pets and I love to incorporate them
into a couple of your family photos when we can!

WHAT TIME OF THE DAY TO YOU SCHEDULE THESE SESSIONS?
All newborn sessions are scheduled usually around mid-morning or early afternoon. If there is a sibling, we will schedule around naptime to ensure a happy child.
What is a beanbag mini session?
Although I use the beanbag for my larger family packages, a mini session is a setup solely done on a large beanbag specifically sold to newborn photographers for shots using mainly blankets or fabrics as a backdrop versus an actual paper/vinyl backdrops; no props are involved. Depending on the age of your tiny human, I start with womb like poses (7-14 days). If they’re unsettled I tend to wrap your baby in one of the many fabrics we have available (7-30 days) and if they’re older (1-2 months) I usually take photos of them from above, awake, while on their backs.
Investment
Think of all the things you have bought that you probably couldn’t afford. These are all luxury items and 9 times out of 10 you had to save up for them. It’s the same thing for Custom Photography. It’s an investment. An investment worth a lot more than any other bought possession. For that reason, many of my clients book months in advance to save up for their session.
I have photographed many, many newborns. I have taken newborn posing and safety workshops. Your baby is just a few days old and I will be all over your precious baby, posing, wrapping, soothing, lifting..etc. You can’t trust just anyone to do that. I always do whats best and safest for your baby. I take time to gently pose your baby, so that not only does the images look peacefully, but actually comfortable. I am patient. I pay attention to the little details because in the end the little things makes a huge difference. I don’t snap until it’s perfect and your baby is relaxed. I’d rather take 15-25 stunning images, than 50 okay ones. Each photograph you get from me is a piece of art. I know and understand light. I know how to use it and make the final images stunning and to help any new mom look her best. I understand Photoshop and only use it to enhance, not change your image. You’re getting and paying for my experience. You won’t be in and out in an hour as I take the time needed to create the artwork you deserve. When you see your images in the gallery, you’ll be happy you’ve spent the time you did in my studio.
Good photography is worth an investment and as they say “cheap photography isn’t good and good photography isn’t cheap”. I strongly urge any potential clients, whether you decide to use my services (which I really hope you do! ♥) to really contemplate the delicate nature, experience, and quality of equipment/props used to create these beautiful images for you, especially when you’re putting your trust and newborn into my hands. Your baby will only be a newborn once!
